What this symptom usually tells us
A symptom narrows the possibilities, but it does not prove which component failed. The same visible behavior can come from power delivery, a connection, firmware, software or a failed component. Accurate diagnosis means testing those paths in a logical order.
Checks that help isolate the cause
- Document when the problem started and whether it is consistent.
- Test with known-good power and external connections where appropriate.
- Separate display or software behavior from a complete power failure.
- Inspect relevant components for heat, damage, corrosion or an electrical short.
- Protect important data before any invasive repair or repeated power attempts.
Repeated power attempts, random part swaps or unsafe disassembly can make some failures worse. Stop if you notice swelling, burning odor, liquid exposure, clicking storage or excessive heat.
When professional diagnosis makes sense
If basic external checks do not identify the cause—or if the device contains important data—professional testing can distinguish a replaceable part from a motherboard, storage or firmware problem before money is spent unnecessarily.
